The roots of the term

It is interesting to note that the origins of the term "bubbler" aren't from the Bay State. It was first developed in Wisconsin and is being used in parts of the Great Lakes region.

While the bubbler may not be the first, Water Bubbler it was certainly the first to use the spherically-shaped valve that could send a single stream water into the air, creating a bubbling effect.

While the term is now a generic term for certain types of product however, the bubbler holds its own in the states of Oregon, Rhode Island, and the extreme eastern part of Connecticut. In reality, the majority of Connecticut residents are unaware that the term "bubbler" is used in other areas of the country.

The Bubbler was actually invented in 1888 in an unassuming town in Wisconsin. Harlan Huckleby, who worked at the Kohler Co., designed the product. However the initial design was not considered sanitary. A new, more efficient design was created to improve the health of the public.

The most important aspect of the bubbler wasn't its ability to produce bubbles, it was the spherically-shaped valve that allowed the water to flow out from the nozzle. This invention was a major advancement in the effort to have clean drinking water.

The origins of the bubbler were not very well-documented. Some historians speculate that the term may have been invented in Milwaukee where it first came from. While the bubbler could have been invented in Milwaukee but the term was not utilized in Milwaukee until 1912, five years after the first fountain was constructed in the city.

Some people say that the "bubbler" name was a con. Some claim it was an attempt to rebrand the spherical, bottle-shaped bubbler that has been used for a long time.

Origins in Portland Oregon

Established in 1862, the Portland Water Company was the first water Bubbler system to provide service to the entire city of Portland. The company also manufactured water faucets as well as patented bubblers. They also began to service Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, South Portland.

In 1908 the company was bought by the Portland Water District. In the beginning, the District was serving only the downtown area of Portland and Cape Elizabeth, but they later expanded their services to South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Westbrook. In 1916 the Bureau installed a hydration station in 1917. By the time 1917 arrived, they had added 20 fountains to the system.

The Benson Bubblers are a trademark of Portland. They are a four-bowl font made of brass. It was created by A.E. Doyle an architect well-known to the world. They were originally cast for $500. The bubbler became a brand for Kohler Water Works.

A little over a hundred years later, the original Benson Bubbler is still in use in areas like Oregon, Wisconsin, Rhode Island and Australia. Some are located in Portland however most are located on the eastern side of the Columbia River.

According to the Portland Water Bureau, the Benson Bubbler uses less than 10% of the city's daily water demand. The Bureau has made significant changes to the Bubbler design to conserve water. They have installed timers to shut down the fountains during low-usage hours, as well as flow-restricting devices to reduce the amount of water used.

There are currently 52 four-bowl Benson Bubblers in the downtown area of Portland. There are also single-bowl models throughout the city, from Linnton to Sellwood. The Water Bureau maintains 74 of the single-bowl fountains.
